Iran blamed for cyberattack on Los Angeles transit system

Security researchers claim that Iranian-backed hackers are behind the cyberattack on the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) in March. In a report released Tuesday, Israeli startup Gambit Security stated that these hackers work for the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS). This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .

A hacktivist group calling itself "Ababil of Minab" had previously claimed responsibility for the attack. They alleged that they stole data from LACMTA systems and then deleted it. Gambit Security experts believe this group is not a new or independent team as they claim, but an entity linked to the Iranian government.

Gambit based its findings on evidence linking the group to previous Iranian cyber campaigns, as well as activity identified by the Israel National Cyber Directorate as belonging to the MOIS. Researchers also examined other attacks on companies in Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.

If Gambit's analysis is correct, "Ababil of Minab" is the latest in a series of fake hacktivist groups working for the Iranian government. An example is the Handala group, which attacked the US medical technology giant Stryker. The FBI later seized the group's websites, and the US Department of Justice accused Iran of being behind these attacks.

Recently, Iran-linked hackers have significantly increased their activity. In April, a coalition of US agencies issued a warning that Iranian hackers were targeting critical American infrastructure.
