Some landmarks will get new names

Uzbekistan is preparing to bring the names of some geographic sites into line with the rules and standards of the state language. The proposal is set out in a draft government resolution that covers the naming of mountain ranges, mountains, peaks, gorges, passes and caves.
According to the document, the planned changes will be made in line with the laws On the State Language and On the Names of Geographical Objects. The draft also says that some sites may be given new names based on recommendations from the national commission responsible for naming and renaming geographic objects.
If approved, the updated names will be used in all legal and regulatory documents, maps, official correspondence and databases. This is intended to ensure that geographic names are written correctly and uniformly across the country.
The Cadastral Agency, together with relevant institutions, is expected to update the necessary documents and maps within two months. Local information signs and nameplates would also be redesigned so that they comply with state language norms.
Officials say the initiative is aimed at creating a single standard for geographic names and preventing differences in spelling and usage.
