Australia has banned the use of China's DeepSeek artificial intelligence on all government-owned devices, Bild reports. There are no restrictions on personal gadgets yet, but the government warns of serious security threats.
"The government is acting quickly and decisively to protect national security and the interests of the country," said Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke.
DeepSeek is the Chinese counterpart to ChatGPT, which was introduced on January 10, 2025. According to the developer, their technology is no less advanced than Western competitors, but it is much cheaper. However, experts warn that all user data is stored on Chinese servers.
Australian cybersecurity expert Dana Mackay says the data collected could be used not only to investigate crimes but also for economic espionage.
DeepSeek also has strong censorship. For example, it does not answer questions about the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown, Xi Jinping, or the Cultural Revolution.
Australia's ban on DeepSeek follows a string of restrictions on Chinese technology. In 2018, the country banned Huawei and ZTE from its 5G infrastructure, and in 2023, it designated TikTok as a potential threat. Now, the United States, France, Ireland, and South Korea are also considering measures to restrict the use of DeepSeek. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
