Historic agreement between Syria's new government and the Kurds

Historic agreement between Syria's new government and the Kurds
The political situation in Syria continues to undergo dramatic changes. On March 10, an agreement was signed between the country's new government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on the unification of the civil and military institutions of the Kurdish autonomy in northeastern Syria with the Syrian government.

According to the AFP agency, the agreement is scheduled to be implemented by the end of 2025. It stipulates not only border posts and airports, but also control over oil and gas fields.

New government in Syria and the fall of the Assad regime

As is known, Bashar Assad was overthrown from power in December 2024. The new government, led by Ahmed al-Shar'a, who replaced him, is trying to restore stability in the country and disperse armed groups.

Cooperation with the SDF is of great importance in this process, as this military force, consisting mainly of Kurds, has long been operating as an independent authority in northeastern Syria.

The struggle with Assad's supporters continues

At the time of the signing of the agreement with the SDF, fierce clashes between Assad's supporters and new government forces were continuing in western Syria, in areas inhabited mainly by Alawites.

According to human rights activists, about 1,500 people have been killed in the past four days as a result of military operations in the provinces of Latakia and Tartus. Among them are civilians and Assad's supporters.

Commenting on the situation, the acting president of Syria, Ahmed al-Shar'a, noted that Assad's supporters have organized terrorist acts and promised that all those responsible for harming civilians will be punished.

Will peace be restored in Syria?

The agreement signed with the SDF, on the one hand, is an important step for the new government from an economic and security point of view, as it will allow the government to control oil and gas resources.

At the same time, military operations in western Syria may further complicate the process of restoring stability in the country.

According to analysts, if the new government forces are able to establish full control in Syria, there may be a chance for the restoration of political stability in the country. However, due to the activities of Assad's supporters and other armed groups, this process may take a long time.

At the same time, the international community is also closely monitoring the events in Syria. The agreement signed with the SDF may be of great importance from the point of view of regional security.

This agreement may be a political success for the new Syrian government, but there are still major challenges for the establishment of real peace in the country.
