Negotiations on the creation of a "grand coalition" have begun in Germany
Two and a half weeks after the snap elections to the Bundestag, negotiations on the formation of a ruling coalition between the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the conservative bloc of the Christian Social Union (CSU) and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) have begun in Berlin. On the evening of Thursday, March 13, the negotiating teams of the conservatives and the Social Democrats met at the CDU headquarters in Berlin.

The negotiations will take place in 16 working groups

Earlier, both parties to the future "grand" coalition announced the names of the members of their delegations who will participate in the negotiations. They will have to work out a coalition agreement in 16 different working groups, each consisting of 16 members, and present their proposals for the coalition agreement by March 24. Complex negotiations are expected on issues such as migration, budget, taxes and defense.

The results of the working group discussions will be presented in the final round of negotiations, which will involve 19 people, including the leaders of the three parties - the next German Chancellor, Christian Democrat Friedrich Merz, the Social Democrats Lars Klingbeil and Saskia Esken, as well as the Bavarian Prime Minister and CDU leader Markus Söder.

Following the snap elections to the Bundestag on February 23, the opposition CDU/CSU bloc, which won the vote, has begun initial consultations with the current ruling coalition member, the SPD. This phase ended on March 8 and resulted in the presentation of a draft framework document that envisages compromises on a number of areas, including a tightening of migration policy, as well as wide-ranging changes in fiscal policy.
