Democrats investigate Trump's agreements for free legal services: corruption or pressure?

Democratic Party members in the U.S. Congress have begun investigating agreements made by President Donald Trump’s administration with several law firms regarding free legal services. They are concerned about potential corruption or fraud cases in these agreements. This was reported by ABC television channel.

According to available information, earlier Trump's administration reached agreements with several law firms to lift sanctions against them in exchange for providing free legal services. In fact, these law firms were previously subjected to sanctions because they had participated in lawsuits against Trump's policies.

By special presidential orders, these firms were deprived of government contracts, and their lawyers were banned from entering government buildings. As a result, several firms agreed to provide approximately one billion dollars’ worth of free legal services to the administration.

Now, Democratic congressmen are investigating the legality of these agreements, seeking to determine whether violations of federal laws such as bribery, coercion, or fraud occurred.

To obtain information, congressmen sent special requests to nine law firms, including well-known firms such as Kirkland & Ellis LLP, Latham & Watkins LLP, Allen Overy Shearman Sterling LLP, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, and Milbank LLP.

“These agreements essentially imply consent to abuse of power. They raise questions about how your firm will defend clients’ interests in the future or deal with issues that might be seen as contradicting President Trump’s policies,” the congressmen’s inquiry states.

Additionally, the Democrats demanded detailed explanations from the law firms about the reasons for concluding these agreements, as well as how compliant the agreements are with legal and ethical standards.
