According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), on April 23 at 12:49 PM local time, a powerful earthquake occurred in the Marmara Sea region, not far from the western part of Istanbul. Official reports indicate that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.2 and lasted about 13 seconds. Afterward, more than 50 aftershocks were recorded.
Otabek Tillayev, our compatriot living in Istanbul, witnessed the event and shared his impressions. According to him, April 23 is celebrated as a national holiday in Turkey, and people were on vacation. Due to this, many people were not at home during the earthquake, preventing significant casualties.
"The shaking was very strong. People immediately ran out of buildings and houses. Shortly afterward, elderly people also came down and gathered in safe areas. Authorities warned the population about possible aftershocks. Therefore, people were afraid to return to their homes and decided to stay outside. Many even set up tents to spend the night," Otabek Tillayev explained.
Opinions among seismologists and specialists vary. Some experts believe this earthquake was expected, while others warn that the main tremors are still ahead. They are concerned future quakes could reach magnitudes of 7 to 7.5.
Official reports indicate that more than 150 people jumped from higher floors due to panic caused by the earthquake. They are currently receiving treatment in hospitals. While Turkish authorities haven't reported any direct fatalities from the quake itself, one citizen of Uzbekistan reportedly died due to panic. His body was sent to Uzbekistan with the assistance of the consulate in Istanbul.
Due to Turkey’s location in a seismically active zone, the population is highly prepared for emergencies. Otabek Tillayev observed that people acted very orderly and disciplined.
"People quickly gathered in open and safe areas. Many took emergency kits prepared beforehand containing water, medicine, and essential foods. We also planned to stay outside, but after midnight we felt more tremors and decided to stay overnight in a mosque," our compatriot shared.
It should be noted that Turkish authorities have been regularly warning Istanbul residents about the possibility of strong earthquakes in recent months. Special sirens and warning systems have been installed throughout the city.
Currently, Istanbul residents have increased safety measures and continue to closely monitor the situation. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
