UN judge imprisoned on charges of human trafficking and exploitation

UN judge imprisoned on charges of human trafficking and exploitation
A United Nations judge, Lydia Mugambe, has been found guilty of human trafficking and forced labor, the Guardian reported.

Mugambe, 50, was accused of forcing a young Ugandan woman to work as a domestic servant in his home and to look after his children. At the time, she was studying for a doctorate in law at Oxford University.

Crimes and verdict

According to the Oxford Crown Court, Mugambe was found guilty of the following crimes:
- Enlisting another person in forced labor;
- Misleading someone for the purpose of asylum;
- Intimidating a witness in a case.

Wildly violating UK immigration laws

“You completely manipulated the victim. You exploited her legal ignorance to your own advantage,” the court documents read.

The court sentenced Mugabe to 6 years and 4 months in prison. He was also banned from having any direct or indirect contact with the victim.

Victim's situation

According to prosecutor Caroline Hogue, the victim has taken refuge in the UK. In her testimony in court, she said she was afraid to return to Uganda because she felt in danger and that she might never see her mother again.

Activities and investigations at the UN

According to official data, Lydia Mugabe was included in the list of UN judges in May 2023. However, by that time, an investigation had already begun against her.

Interestingly, British police visited her home 3 months before this appointment and conducted an interview. This means that this circumstance was either not taken into account during the appointment process or a proper investigation was not carried out.

The judge's human rights record was also mentioned

The judge who read out the verdict described the case as "deeply regrettable" and acknowledged Mugabe's work in protecting human rights. However, he considered that his actions deserved a severe punishment.

The fact that a person who promoted law and justice throughout his career was found guilty of such serious crimes is causing great public resonance.

What do you think - do such cases not indicate the need to reconsider the personnel selection system in international organizations?
