Important events are developing on the international political scene - according to Keith Kellogg, the US special representative for Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin may personally participate in the Russia-Ukraine talks scheduled for May 15 in Istanbul. If this happens, it is possible that US President Donald Trump will also attend the meeting.
Kellogg explained this proposal as follows:
"We hope that President Putin will also go to the talks. If so, then President Trump may also come to Istanbul. This will be a completely unexpected, historic meeting," he told reporters.
Hope and pressure from Trump's visit
According to a high-ranking source in the US presidential administration, Trump's words about a possible visit to Istanbul were perceived as serious diplomatic pressure on the Kremlin. A visit of this level could give new color and seriousness to the negotiations to end the war.
Trump himself stated that his condition on May 15 was unknown:
"I've thought about flying. I don't know exactly where I'll be. I have a lot of meetings, but if I see that the meeting in Istanbul can produce some results, then I may go," Trump said in his statement.
US - a call for peace
Keith Kellogg stressed that the US is primarily interested in a ceasefire. In his opinion, military operations should cease before any negotiations. Only then can other aspects of the relationship be discussed.
According to the special representative, among the issues to be discussed in Istanbul may be proposals for the deployment of NATO members - Great Britain, France, Germany and Poland - on the western banks of the Dnieper River.
Will there be a personal meeting between Putin and Zelensky?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on May 11 that he was ready to meet Vladimir Putin in person in Istanbul. After this historic statement, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stressed that Russia is “looking for a long-term path to peace,” but did not respond to Zelensky’s offer of personal talks.
If Putin and Trump sit at the same negotiating table, it could be a major turning point not only between Russia and Ukraine, but also in all international relations. For now, the whole world is looking to Istanbul - the beginning of a historic dialogue. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
