On May 15, an important meeting took place in Ankara between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Following the talks, Erdoğan stated that if the leaders of Russia and Ukraine are ready for direct negotiations, Turkey is ready to offer its territory as the venue.
According to Anadolu Agency, Erdoğan emphasized that a “historic opportunity” has emerged to resolve the conflict between the two countries through negotiations.
“We believe the time has come to resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine through direct negotiations. For this, it is vital that both sides find common ground and seek agreement,” Erdoğan said.
Diplomacy behind closed doors
The meeting between Erdoğan and Zelensky in Ankara was held behind closed doors. It was attended by top Turkish officials — Minister of Defense Yaşar Güler, Head of National Intelligence İbrahim Kalın, and the President’s advisor on foreign policy and security Akif Çağatay Kılıç. During the discussion, issues of security, diplomatic solutions, and the future negotiation process were reportedly addressed.
Diplomatic activity in Antalya as well
At the same time, diplomatic efforts on the war in Ukraine continue in Turkey’s Antalya province. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Marco Rubio met during the NATO foreign ministers’ summit.
