Three countries have threatened Israel with sanctions over the situation in Gaza

Three countries have threatened Israel with sanctions over the situation in Gaza
The governments of Great Britain, France, and Canada issued a serious statement regarding Israel’s military actions in the Gaza Strip. According to Reuters, if Israel does not stop its armed attacks and does not lift the imposed restrictions on humanitarian aid, sanctions will be imposed against it.

The joint statement emphasized: “We have always supported Israel’s right to protect its citizens. However, this escalation is absolutely disproportionate and may be regarded as a violation of international law.” Also, there was opposition expressed to actions aimed at establishing new settlements in the West Bank.

This statement was made after Israel announced the launch of a new military operation called “Gideon’s Chariots” on May 16. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had stated his intention to take full control of Gaza. International experts have long warned about the increasing threat of famine in the enclave.

The statement emphasized that refusing to provide assistance to civilians in a critical humanitarian situation such as in Gaza is considered an action contrary to international norms. In this situation, London, Ottawa, and Paris announced their readiness to apply harsh measures such as sanctions “without any hesitation.”

In response to this statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the following:

“London, Paris, and Ottawa are offering a reward for the genocidal attack carried out against Israel on October 7. These threats open the way for similar atrocities. Israel will not stop the war until full victory is achieved, the hostages are released, and Gaza is demilitarized.”

Hamas, in turn, welcomed the statement by the three countries as “a principled objection to the policy of blockade and starvation.”

According to available data, since March 2, Israel has halted the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza. During this period, at least 57 children have died. The World Health Organization stated that this number may increase further.

Zamin.uz editorial board continues to closely monitor the development of international relations and events in Gaza. What do you think — how effective could these sanction threats be in resolving the problem?
