Former Icelandic President Guðni Jóhannesson is continuing his career in a completely different field after leaving office. He is now serving as a tour guide at Thingvellir National Park, writes Iceland Mirror.
Jóhannesson was elected president in 2016, becoming the youngest head of state in the country's history. His two-term term ends in 2024. But he has chosen not to retire or settle down — he has chosen to continue his active life.
It was during his visit to Thingvellir National Park in the summer of 2024 that the park administration offered him a job as a ranger. The president gladly accepted the offer and decided to start working for the summer of 2025.
From president to tour guide: a responsible transition
Jóhannesson successfully completed a special course in first aid before starting work. Now 56, Goodney gives daily tours to visitors to the park, explaining the history and significance of the natural area.

The interesting thing is that most visitors treat him as an ordinary employee and do not know who he is. Johannesson says: “It is a special pleasure for me that they do not recognize me. It is a very beautiful feeling.”
National park - national pride
Thingvellir is one of Iceland's historical and natural monuments. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the country's parliament was first established here. Johannesson considers his work here to be a continuation of his public service.
He emphasizes that protecting nature, bringing history to the general public, and informing tourists about national values is also a form of service to the country.
From science to active life
In addition to the presidency, Jóhannesson is also a professor of history. After the presidency, he taught students about Icelandic history and political processes at a local university. That is, he continues to use his knowledge and experience to serve the interests of the people.
Conclusion: an example of simplicity and patriotism
Gudni Jóhannesson's entry into a simple job in Thingvellir is not only an amazing event, but also a divine lesson for the public: not all opportunities end with the end of state leadership. There can be different forms of service to one's people. Jóhannesson's act is a vivid example of this. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
