
On June 22, a suicide bomber detonated himself inside a church in Damascus, the capital of Syria. The incident was reported by the SANA news agency.
The Syrian Interior Ministry stated on its official Telegram channel: “A suicide bomber affiliated with the terrorist organization ISIS entered St. Elias Church in the Duwaila district of Damascus, opened fire, and then detonated himself.”
“Initial reports indicate that several civilians were killed and others injured. Security forces rushed to the scene, cordoned off the entire area, and the relevant teams began collecting evidence and investigating the circumstances of the attack,” the statement said.
The Syrian Ministry of Health reported that nine civilians were killed and 13 injured in the initial toll of the terrorist attack.
According to preliminary data, the suicide bomber opened fire on passersby with an automatic weapon before activating an explosive belt inside the building.
This is the first suicide bombing in Damascus since the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
