YouTube usage restricted in Australia
The Australian government is introducing the world’s first law banning social media use for children under the age of 16. Despite initial exemptions, YouTube has also been added to the list of restricted platforms.

Under the new regulation, children under 16 will be prohibited from creating accounts on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube. The law will take effect in December 2025. Users will still be able to watch videos, but registration, commenting, or uploading will be banned.

YouTube, owned by Google, opposed the decision, arguing that it is not a social media platform and provides beneficial content for children. However, Australia's eSafety Commissioner described it as a platform where “harmful content is frequently encountered” and recommended the restriction.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the measure “an important step to reduce the negative impact of social media on children.” Communications Minister Anika Wells added, “we are not afraid of legal threats — this is a fight for children’s wellbeing.”

Tech companies that fail to comply with the law could be fined up to 50 million Australian dollars. They will be required to delete existing accounts, block new registrations, and prevent any actions that bypass the restrictions.
