In the US political arena, increasingly firm statements are being voiced on the issue of the Russia–Ukraine war. According to Senator Lindsey Graham, in order to increase pressure on Moscow and end the war, it is necessary to influence not only Russia but also its partners who purchase oil. For this purpose, he emphasizes the need to consistently continue the threat of secondary sanctions.
According to Graham, Russian President Vladimir Putin is not afraid of sanctions and is trying to bypass them in various ways. However, in the senator’s view, the most severe blow for the Kremlin leader would be economic pressure on his main clients, that is, major trading partners.
“He does not take sanctions seriously, because he is used to bypassing them. But if we take tough measures against his main clients, this will seriously limit his economic capabilities,” the senator said in an interview with NBC News.
Graham added that the United States, if necessary, is ready to confront the main buyers of Russian oil — India, China, and Brazil. According to him, such countries, if they continue to buy Russian oil and support the war economy, may be deprived of access to the US economic system.
The senator also noted that Donald Trump may support this idea during the planned talks in Alaska. According to Graham, if Washington cannot achieve peace in Ukraine, the most effective way to settle accounts with Moscow will be to go after Putin’s “clients” in the international market.
Following these statements, debates in the international political arena have intensified even further. Experts say such actions may lead to sharp changes not only in the economic but also in the diplomatic sphere.
