Dog meat farms are shutting down en masse in South Korea

In South Korea, a large number of farms engaged in dog meat production have ceased operations. This process began after a special law was adopted in the country a year ago, reported Yonhap.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, since August 2024, when the law came into force, 1,072 out of 1,537 dog meat farms in the country (that is, 70%) have been closed. These farms had 346,000 dogs, which accounts for 74% of the total 468,000 dogs raised for meat in the country.

Authorities predict that by the end of 2025, at least 75% of such farms will shut down. A ministry representative noted that this figure is higher than expected and linked it to the public’s understanding that banning dog meat consumption is “a duty to future generations,” as well as to the government’s financial support.

The law prohibits the breeding, slaughter, distribution, and sale of dogs for meat. It also provides subsidies to those working in this field to change their profession.

Starting in 2027, after a three-year transition period, violators of the law will face up to two years in prison or a fine of 30 million won (about 21,000 USD).

It should be recalled that in 2024 the National Assembly of South Korea passed a special law banning the consumption of dog meat. At that time, 90% of the country’s population was reported to oppose eating dog meat.

In conclusion, dog meat farms in the country are gradually disappearing. This shows that South Korean society is stepping toward new values.
