In the coastal states of the USA, the spread of the dangerous bacteria Vibrio vulnificus is significantly increasing. According to The Daily Tribune, this bacteria has completely taken over the country’s popular beaches and poses a serious threat to the population. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the infection has been reported in 11 states, including Florida and Louisiana, where 20 and 17 deaths have been recorded, respectively.
In the media, the bacteria, described as a “meat-eating” bacteria, is active in warm saltwater and can enter the human body through consumption of raw seafood or through open wounds. Every fifth infection can result in death within 48 hours.
Experts link the current spread of the bacteria to climate change. A sharp rise in water temperature creates favorable conditions for Vibrio vulnificus and contributes to its rapid multiplication. The first symptoms of the disease appear as vomiting, diarrhea, and itching or blisters on the skin. Risk groups include people with weakened immunity, elderly individuals, and those with chronic illnesses.
The CDC urges the population to take precautions: do not swim in open water with open wounds, thoroughly cook seafood, and immediately seek medical help if unusual symptoms appear after contact with seawater.
This outbreak is considered the second major case in the USA in recent years. Previously, in 2023, similar cases of bacterial infection were recorded in North Carolina and Texas. Specialists call on people to remain vigilant and careful, paying attention when consuming seafood.
