The government of the Kingdom of Denmark recently announced an important decision that has attracted public attention. The country’s leadership declared that the 25 percent tax on book sales will now be abolished. The main purpose of this step is to encourage the population, especially young people and teenagers, to read more books, to enhance the culture of reading, and to promote the spiritual and cultural development of the nation. This was reported by The Guardian.

According to the data, this decision may result in an annual loss of approximately 330 million kroner (about 44 million euros) to the state treasury. However, the government does not see this as a loss, but rather as an investment in the spiritual and cultural future of the nation. The abolition of the book tax will reduce book prices and make them more affordable for the general public. In turn, this will help increase interest in reading among citizens, particularly among teenagers.

At the same time, this initiative was introduced after the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) published alarming statistics. The OECD data indicates that about 24 percent of Danish 15-year-olds struggle to fully understand even simple texts. This figure is 4 percent higher than it was a decade ago.
