In St. Petersburg, cameras that can determine the racial and ethnic affiliation of people have started operating. This was reported by Igor Nikонов, Deputy Chairman of the Information and Communications Committee. According to him, these cameras will help identify groups located in specific areas and will serve as a basis for law enforcement agencies to make relevant decisions.
Nikонов explained that the system's main task is to identify ethnic affiliation, allowing the police to monitor areas with high concentrations of migrants and detect "rubber" apartments. Currently, about 50,000 cameras are equipped with this function, but results are still inconclusive. The statistics on crimes will be finalized by the end of the year.
The system is capable of recognizing six different ethnic categories: people from the Caucasus, East Asia, Central Asia, Europeans, Asians, and people of Negroid descent. These cameras provide an opportunity to monitor the city's population and identify ethnic relations.
It should be noted that the installation of such cameras in St. Petersburg was announced in February 2025. At that time, the head of the city's interethnic relations committee, Oleg Kapitanov, mentioned plans to equip eight thousand street cameras with the "ethnic affiliation identification" function.
The implementation of this new technology is expected to be an important step in making significant decisions related to the increasing complexity of migration and ethnic relations in recent years.
