On Friday, August 29th, the Financial Times, citing four sources familiar with the interviews and internal discussions, reported that US President Donald Trump believes the idea of deploying Chinese troops to Ukraine as peacekeepers is appropriate. Sources note that this proposal was interpreted as supporting the approach put forward by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to the publication, during a meeting at the White House on August 18 with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a number of European leaders, Trump proposed asking China to send a contingent of peacekeepers to control the "neutral zone" along the 1,300-kilometer front line as part of a possible peace agreement with Russia.
The White House strongly denied any discussion of such an idea. It was noted that a high-ranking representative of the administration, speaking to the FT, denied this report as "False."
According to the Financial Times, the Russian side first raised the topic of Chinese peacekeepers in the context of "security guarantees" during the preliminary talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul in the spring of 2022. At the same time, according to Axios, during a meeting with Trump on August 15 in Alaska, President Putin mentioned China among the possible guarantors of Ukraine's security.
In short, new scenarios are being discussed around a complex "peace formula" in the geopolitical arena: according to FT sources - Chinese peacekeepers, according to the White House version - such discussions never occurred. Between affirmation and negation, the main question remains open: how can the practical mechanisms of a possible agreement work?
