In Indonesia, public discontent has begun to intensify. Since August 25 of this year, unrest has been observed in several cities of the country, and at least 4 people have died, reports “Associated Press.”
It is reported that the demonstrations began in Jakarta and are currently spreading rapidly. The reason for the start was indicated as reports that deputies receive monthly housing compensation. Critics note that at the same time, the population is facing rising prices, tax burdens, and unemployment, which caused the discontent.
On August 28, in Jakarta, one person died after being hit by a police vehicle during the demonstration. According to authorities, seven police officers have been arrested regarding this incident and are being questioned.
The unrest was observed not only in Jakarta but also in Medan (North Sumatra), Surakarta and Magelang (Central Java), Malang (East Java), Bengkulu (Sumatra Island), Pekanbaru (Sumatra, Riau Province), and Manokwari (West Papua).
In Bandung (West Java), demonstrators set fire to the local parliament building, and in Surabaya (East Java), they attacked the regional police headquarters and destroyed vehicles. Security forces used tear gas and water cannons, while demonstrators resisted with wooden sticks.
In Jakarta alone, 951 people were arrested on August 28.
According to AP, on August 29, in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi Province, demonstrators also set fire to the local parliament building. On the morning of August 30, rescuers found the bodies of three people in the building. In addition, five people received burn and fracture injuries; they jumped from windows of the building.
Today, August 30, public order prevails in Jakarta. Emergency services are removing burned cars from the roads, cleaning bus stops, and clearing police buildings.
