A powerful earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has killed at least more than 800 people and injured over 2,800. Officials said the quake struck at midnight at a depth of 10 kilometers. Rescuers continue searching for those trapped under collapsed houses.
The most severe damage was recorded in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces. Reports say some villages were completely destroyed, and communication problems in mountainous areas are complicating rescue operations. Military helicopters are transporting the injured to hospitals.
The Ministry of Health has appealed for international aid. According to officials, thousands of families have been left homeless. However, no foreign country has yet officially offered assistance.
Afghanistan has faced several deadly earthquakes in recent years. In 2022, a 6.1-magnitude quake killed nearly 1,000 people. International organizations stress that help is needed to ease the impact of this disaster as the country continues to struggle with a humanitarian crisis.
