At the defense summit of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Prague, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte made an important statement. According to him, if a peace agreement is reached, Moscow has no right to interfere in the decision on the deployment of Western troops on Ukrainian territory; only Kyiv will decide on this matter.
"Why should Russia's opinion about Ukraine be important to us? Ukraine is an independent state. He determines how to ensure his own safety. Finland has not received permission from Russia to join NATO. If Ukraine considers it expedient to invite security forces, this is its full right," Rutte said, commenting on Russian President Vladimir Putin's remarks.
The NATO leader emphasized that the United States is ready to support the initiative of a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine, but no issue of sending American troops there is on the agenda. He believes that US President Donald Trump understands the need to ensure genuine security guarantees for Kyiv and is taking decisive action in this direction.
"It will not repeat the mistakes made in the Budapest Memorandum or the Minsk agreements," Mark Rutte emphasized.
This statement is seen as an important political signal aimed at protecting Ukraine's independent decisions in the international arena.
