US President Donald Trump announced the temporary suspension of the federal government's activities - the start of staff reductions amid a shutdown. In an interview with journalists at the White House, he stated that "the final dismissal process has already begun" and blamed the Democrats for this situation.
According to the president, the intolerance in Congress has led to the loss of many jobs. At the same time, Trump withdrew from the topic without disclosing additional details regarding the reduced positions and specific procedures.
Due to the shatdown, approximately 750,000 federal employees were sent on unpaid leave. However, the necessary infrastructure, such as air traffic control, police, border protection, and emergency medical services, continues to operate as an "exception." Trump had previously instigated mass layoffs if the government did not resume operations.
Recall that from October 1, the activities of a number of government agencies were officially frozen due to the failure to implement a temporary budget agreement. Since then, negotiations in Congress have practically stalled: an agreement between Republicans and Democrats on government support for low-income Obamacare health insurance has not yet been reached.
As a result, while political confrontation continues in Washington, uncertainty remains for federal officials. Unless an agreement is reached on the issue, there is a possibility that the list of dismissals will expand.
