The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced a sharp increase in chikungunya fever cases worldwide since the beginning of 2025. According to the organization, this year the number of cases exceeded 445,000, and 155 people died from the disease.
WHO experts assess the likelihood of a wider global spread of the chikungunya virus as high. So far, the disease has been recorded in at least 40 countries.
In 2025, malaria spread rapidly, especially in the Americas - 100,329 confirmed and 228,591 suspected cases were identified, with 115 deaths. In Europe, 56,456 cases were registered, 40 of which ended in death. In Southeast Asia, 3,420 confirmed cases and 21,299 suspected cases have been recorded.
Chikungunya is a type of malaria characterized by fever, joint and muscle pain, rash, and fatigue. Carriers of the disease are mosquitoes of the species Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, which can also transmit the Dengue malaria virus.
