Officials of the European Union expressed concern over Tajikistan’s decision not to arrest Vladimir Putin. This was reported by the spokesperson for the EU External Action Service, Anitta Hipper.
According to her, despite the fact that the President of Russia is wanted under a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court, he was not detained during his visit to Dushanbe. Tajikistan, as a member state of the ICC, was obliged to comply with the court’s statute.
“The European Union supports ensuring accountability for all crimes committed by Russia during its war of aggression against Ukraine. It is important to support international investigations to guarantee justice for victims, compensation, and to prevent such crimes from happening again,” Hipper said in her statement.
The EU also stated that it would continue to support the investigations conducted by the ICC prosecutor in Ukraine and called on all countries to cooperate with the court.
For reference, on March 17, 2023, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Commissioner for Children’s Rights, Maria Lvova-Belova. They are accused of forcibly deporting Ukrainian children.
Earlier, Putin was also not arrested during his visit to Mongolia. This incident has sparked debate in the international arena — some see it as political caution, while others view it as a blatant violation of international law.
