The prison system in Norway has faced a serious crisis - there are no vacancies in penitentiary institutions across the country. TV2 reports that there is currently a shortage of seats for 560 prisoners.
This situation was caused by several factors. In particular, three prisons in Oslo, Sarpsborg, and Drammen were closed due to non-compliance with fire safety requirements. Also, the shortage of personnel in correctional institutions has increased - some employees have transferred to other government agencies, while others have left their jobs due to low wages and difficult working conditions.
Officials are considering a number of measures to alleviate the problem. Among them are such options as placing two prisoners in the cells and expanding the possibility of early release of some offenders.
Local experts note that these decisions may negatively affect the effectiveness of the penitentiary system. At the same time, the government is also exploring plans to build new prisons or establish temporary facilities to address the problem.
