There has been another loud statement on the world political stage. According to U.S. President Donald Trump, countries that are part of the BRICS alliance have begun to withdraw from the organization following economic threats from Washington. He announced this during his meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei at the White House.
According to Trump, he gave a clear warning to the states planning to join BRICS:
— I told them this: “If you want, join BRICS, but then we will impose tariffs on your goods.” After that, everyone started leaving. They knew that BRICS was an organization directed against the dollar. I said: “If you want to play this game, I will impose tariffs on all your products.” They replied: “No, we are leaving BRICS.” Now they don’t even mention it anymore, — said Trump.
The president’s statement is being regarded as another tool of pressure in U.S. foreign trade policy. In his view, BRICS has turned into a platform seeking to weaken the position of the dollar in the global economy.
It should be recalled that BRICS originally consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Later, Egypt, the UAE, Ethiopia, and Iran joined the group. Starting from 2025, Indonesia is also set to become a member.
In addition, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam cooperate with BRICS in partnership status.
In July, Trump called BRICS “a political bloc directed against America” and declared that any country supporting this organization would face an additional 10% import tariff.
So far, neither BRICS nor any of its members have officially announced withdrawal from the alliance. However, political analysts believe that Trump’s pressure will only intensify the struggle between new geopolitical centers of influence in the global economy.
Thus, Trump’s statement has once again heated up the political situation around BRICS — whether his threats will turn into reality or not will become clear in the coming months.
