Among US citizens permanently residing abroad, the number of those renouncing American citizenship for political reasons is sharply increasing.
According to The Washington Post, approximately 5,000-6,000 Americans officially apply to withdraw their citizenship annually. Previously, tax and organizational issues were cited as the main reasons, but recently political discontent has become the main reason for this decision.
Immigration lawyers note that this trend has intensified in the last two years. They noted that the process of renouncing citizenship is expensive and complex, but despite this, the number of people making such a decision is increasing.
According to a survey conducted by the international consulting company Greenback, 51% of Americans considered withdrawing from citizenship between 2024 and 2025 due to dissatisfaction with the political climate in the US.
According to experts, this situation is linked to domestic political tensions, inter-party conflicts, social instability, and distrust in foreign policy in the US.
