Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that if Israeli leader Benjamin Netanyahu visits the country, he will be arrested on the basis of an International Criminal Court (ICC) order, the Toronto Sun reported.
This statement caused great controversy in Canada. A number of local publications, including the Toronto Sun, accused Carney of "putting his personal views above Canadian national interests."
The publication notes that at a time when relations with Washington are still in a difficult situation, Carney is talking about taking measures against Netanyahu, who is considered a close ally of US President Donald Trump. The newspaper called this decision "suspicious court verdicts suspicious for political reasons."
For reference, in November 2024, the ICC officially charged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant for war crimes in Gaza and issued an arrest warrant. Canada supported this decision at the time.
In his statement, Mark Carney emphasized Canada's commitment to international legal norms, stating that "the rule of law should be manifested in practice, not in words."
The Israeli side strongly rejects the ICC's decision. Tel Aviv believes that the court is operating under political pressure, and its verdicts have no real legal force.
Experts believe that this statement by the Canadian leader could trigger a new political dispute in relations between Western countries. Carney's sharp stance demands new diplomatic negotiations between Ottawa and Washington.
