First female prime minister: A new era begins in Japanese politics
A historic event took place in Japan – Sanae Takaichi became the country’s first female prime minister. She officially took office in Tokyo. This event has become an inspiration for many Japanese women, as men have dominated the nation’s politics for centuries.

Takaichi compares herself to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, calling herself “Japan’s Iron Lady.” She has proposed tax incentives for families with children and for companies that open childcare facilities in workplaces. However, she also emphasizes the importance of maintaining women’s traditional family roles.

According to the World Economic Forum, Japan ranks 118th out of 148 countries in terms of gender equality. Only 15.7% of the members of parliament are women. Although Japanese women are educated and highly qualified, their share in politics and business remains low.

Takaichi faces major challenges: an economic crisis, inflation, and the need to restore voter trust. Women’s rights are not expected to be a main focus of her policies, but she has already entered history as Japan’s first female prime minister.
