European leaders have supported US President Donald Trump’s new proposal to stop the war in Ukraine. They believe the fighting should stop immediately, and the current front line should serve as the basis for negotiations. A joint statement was signed by 11 leaders led by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Trump proposed that “the fighting should stop, and both sides should remain in their current positions.” He said this could save thousands of lives. However, the idea has sparked debate among Western countries.
Russia firmly rejected the proposal. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that “such a ceasefire would be temporary.” According to him, Moscow seeks only “long-term and stable peace.” Russia also demands the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reacted cautiously to Trump’s idea. He said handing over Donetsk and Luhansk would not stop the war but rather give Russia an opportunity for further attacks. “Ukraine’s position has not changed – we defend our territories,” Zelensky said.
A meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected in Budapest. However, the date has not yet been set. The Kremlin has not provided details but stated that Russia has not withdrawn its conditions.
