US President Donald Trump announced his intention to fundamentally modernize the country's navy and implement a new maritime strategy called the "Golden Fleet," The Wall Street Journal reports, citing sources.
According to reports, the new fleet will have to effectively respond to potential military threats from China. This plan is currently under discussion, but Trump himself is personally monitoring the process.
Within the framework of the new concept, the US plans to use large warships equipped with long-range missiles and smaller rapid-moving corvettes. A new class of frigates equipped with hypersonic weapons may also be created.
According to Brian Clark, a retired naval officer, Washington aims to replenish the fleet with 280-300 ships and numerous drones. In his opinion, the simultaneous use of large and small vessels is a model that meets modern threats.
- The current fleet is not able to effectively combat new threats. This was clearly seen in the repelling of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. "That's why we need a fleet of a new format," Clark said.
He noted that the construction of large-scale warships may not be completed during Trump's term in office, but there is a high probability that small corvettes will begin production.
In one of his recent speeches, President Trump said he didn't like the appearance of some fleet ships and described himself as a "very aesthetic person." At the same time, he reminded that in 2026 the US will receive 19 new warships and the administration will launch an anti-missile defense system called "Golden Dome."
The "Golden Fleet" concept, according to analysts, demonstrates the Trump administration's intention to restore US naval power and strengthen its strategy against China and other geopolitical rivals.
If the plan succeeds, the new generation of the American fleet will not only increase combat capability, but will also strengthen US dominance in the global sea and become a symbol of new power.
