The Central Bank of Argentina presented a new commemorative silver coin of historical significance in honor of the 2026 World Cup. This coin expresses deep respect not only for the country's football traditions but also for the legacy of the legendary Diego Maradona.
On the reverse side of the specially issued coin, in the form of a trajectory, is depicted the moment when Maradona, in a match against England at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, ran solo across the entire field and scored the so-called "goal of the century." In connection with the 40th anniversary of this historic event in 2026, this design acquires special significance.
On the front side of the coin is an image of a ball rising from bottom to top. This symbolizes the Argentinians' boundless passion for football and their love for the team. The Central Bank's official statement emphasized that "this coin is the spirit, pride, and symbol of the genius of Argentine football on the world stage."
The coin is also very rare in manufacture: made of 925-grade silver, weighs 27 grams, and has a diameter of 40 millimeters. Its circulation is also limited - only 2.5 thousand copies. The denomination of the coin is set at 10 dollars. A gold version of the same design is also being prepared for international collectors.
Maradona's performance in the 1986 Mexican championship was a turning point in football history. He brought Argentina the world title not only with a "goal of the century," but also with his skillful play throughout the entire tournament. Thanks to this, he is remembered not only in Argentina, but also throughout the world as the "king of football."
Argentina is still the reigning world champion. The team, led by Leo Messi, won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and this achievement, associated with the spirit of Maradona, became a symbol of historical continuity for the country.
As a reminder, the next World Cup - the 2026 World Cup - will be held from June 11 to July 19 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. For the first time in history, the tournament will be jointly hosted by three countries.
Thus, the new silver coin will go down in history not only as a numismatic value, but also as a memory of an entire generation and a vivid symbol of national pride through football.
