US President Donald Trump's statement on the resumption of nuclear tests caused serious controversy among the world community. This action is not only considered a threat to international security but could also undermine his intention to win the Nobel Peace Prize, writes The Washington Post.
According to the publication, Trump instructed the Pentagon to begin nuclear weapons testing "on equal terms" with Russia and China. This decision, according to analysts, was an attempt to demonstrate military power before trade negotiations with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. At the same time, this move increases the likelihood that it will drastically change the long-standing US nuclear policy and affect the global balance.
The article emphasizes that the idea of resuming nuclear tests seriously tarnishes the peaceful image of the US. Arms control experts also assessed Trump's statement as dangerous and unfounded.
According to the Executive Director of the Arms Control Association, Deryl Kimball, the US does not have any technical or military need to restart nuclear explosion tests. "This decision is nothing but a political demonstration. The National Nuclear Security Administration is not ready to do this - it will take at least 36 months to restart such tests," he said.
According to him, this idea is unrealistic, since most of the agency's employees are currently on unpaid leave due to the shutdown.
Tung Zhao, a researcher at the Carnegie International Peace Foundation, emphasized that this statement could also encourage Beijing to accelerate its nuclear program. "If Washington starts working on new technologies, there is a high probability that Beijing will follow the same path," he said.
Trump announced on October 30th that he would soon begin nuclear tests. He believes that the US, like other nuclear powers, has the right to inspect its arsenal. This increases the risk of a new arms race in the international arena.
In response to this statement, the Kremlin also issued an official statement. The press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, noted that the tests of the "Burevestnik" and "Poseidon" missiles conducted in Russia did not include nuclear explosions and did not violate international treaties. "We hope that this information was correctly conveyed to President Trump," he said.
Analysts believe that Trump's statement about nuclear tests could negatively impact his international reputation. For a politician vying for the Nobel Peace Prize, this decision is considered a controversial step not only from a diplomatic point of view but also in the domestic political arena.
Thus, the controversy surrounding nuclear policy in Washington is intensifying. Many experts emphasize that if the US resumes nuclear tests, this could seriously jeopardize not only global stability but also global peace.
