MaineHealth, one of the largest medical institutions in Maine, has sent false death notices to 531 patients. The letters also provided instructions to relatives regarding property matters and inheritance matters, writes The Guardian.
Shortly after, MaineHealth representatives explained the cause of the incident, stating that the error occurred due to a technical malfunction in the IT system, which "forms data on inheritance cases." They sincerely apologized to the victims and stated that the error had been corrected.
The company's statement notes that records of patients being alive have been preserved in all medical databases.
At the same time, there were those who were surprised by such a letter. A woman who wanted to remain anonymous said in an interview with CBS13:
- I received a letter of condolence from the examined hospital. Honestly, I was very nervous. After that, I called the hospital, and the employee said: "I'm glad to hear that you're still healthy." And I said: "Yes, me too."
The patient also expressed concern that such an error could affect her medical dаta:
"I don't even know where they got this information from," he said.
Thus, hundreds of patients who ended up on the "officially deceased" list for a few minutes experienced real shock after the incident.
