An explosion occurred during Friday prayers in Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, local authorities reported. As a result of the incident, at least 50 people sustained bodily injuries.
According to the available information, the tragedy took place in the mosque of State Secondary School No. 27, located in the northern part of Jakarta, in the Kelapa Gading district. It is noted that at the time of the incident, the mosque was mostly filled with students, so most of the injured are teenagers.
Preliminary reports indicate that the explosion occurred near the loudspeaker system. However, officials have not yet provided an exact cause — an investigation is underway to determine whether the incident was caused by a malfunction in the electrical system or by an improvised explosive device.
After the explosion, ambulances and rescue teams arrived at the scene. All the injured were taken to nearby hospitals.
The police announced that an investigation into the incident had begun. Security camera footage is being reviewed, and witnesses are being interviewed.
At present, the area around the mosque has been sealed off, and investigative work continues to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
