Politicians are being mass detained in Kyrgyzstan: what are they suspected of?

The political situation in neighboring Kyrgyzstan has escalated. Mass searches were carried out in the homes of a number of well-known politicians and public activists in the country, and ten people were arrested. This chain of events is causing a great resonance among the public.

What happened?

A general charge has been filed against all the detainees - Article 278 of the Criminal Code of Kyrgyzstan, namely, preparation for the organization of "mass riots." The scale of the actions of law enforcement agencies, the number of detainees, and even the interrogation of their family members caused concern and dissatisfaction among many.

Who was targeted?

The development of events began on November 22 with the announcement of an investigation by the Ministry of Internal Affairs against the politician Temirlan Sultanbekov. He is suspected of inciting a change of power and unrest. After the search of his house, he was immediately taken for questioning.

Relatives of the country's former president, Almazbek Atambayev, were also on the "blacklist":

  • The former president's son, Kadyrbek Atambayev, has been arrested;
  • Former First Lady Raisa Atambayeva was also interrogated as part of the investigation, but was later released.

The search and inquiry did not end there. Emergency checks were also carried out in the apartments of the following persons:

  • Former deputy Shaylaubek Atazov;
  • Former head of the financial police, Siymik Dzhapikeev (released after interrogation);
  • Former deputy Kubanychbek Kadyrov;
  • Politician Adakhan Madumarov (technical means and documents were confiscated).

The house of journalist Dmitry Lozhnikov, who categorically denied contact with the suspects, was also searched.

Who is in prison now?

Currently, Temirlan Sultanbekov, Kodirbek Atambayev, and Shaylobek Atazov have been placed in temporary detention. The court is preparing to impose a preventive measure against them. Among them are Damir Musakeev, Almazbek Atambayev's former bodyguard, and Ermek Ermatov, a member of the Social Democratic Party.

Evidence and plans

According to the official statement of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, this group planned to cause instability and unrest in the country after the upcoming parliamentary elections.

"During the operational activities, weapons, ammunition, combat grenades, cash in the amount of $150,000, and documents confirming the financing of illegal activities were seized from the suspects as material evidence," the report says.
