Young Chechen woman who fled was killed in Armenia
23-year-old Aishat Baymuradova fled Chechnya hoping for a free life in Armenia. She escaped family control, cut her hair, removed her head covering, and began posting photos on social media.

In October, Aishat was found dead in a rented apartment in Yerevan. The woman and man who were with her soon left for Russia. The man is suspected to be connected to Chechen leader Kadyrov.

Before arriving in Armenia, Aishat had been forced into marriage and was under constant family control. She wanted to start a new life and live freely.

This event increased concerns about the safety of Chechen women. Many refugees avoid public events and try not to speak Chechen. Aishat’s death heightened their fear.
