
Legendary American boxer George Foreman's gold medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics has been put up for auction at the "Lelands" auction house. This was reported on the official page of the auction organization.
The auction of the historical monument on the Forman caused great interest among sports fans and collectors. This medal is valued as a distant gift from his youth in boxing. At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, Forman was 19 years old and won in the +81 kg weight category. He won his first Olympic gold medal, defeating Soviet boxer Jonas Čepulis by technical knockout in the final.
The starting price at the auction was set at $2,500, and the current offer has exceeded $6,486. The "Lelands" auction house, famous for the sale of sports monuments, has been operating since 1985, and today they have extensive experience in acquiring and putting up for sale the most valuable monuments of the history of sports.
Foreman is known not only as an Olympic champion, but also as a former heavyweight champion who has won the WBC, WBA, and IBF belts. He has had 81 fights in the professional ring, winning 76 of them, 68 of which ended in knockouts.
Forman transitioned to the professional ring in 1969 and retired in 1977. However, 10 years later, in 1987, he returned to the ring and in 1997, at the age of 48, practically ended his sports career. Today, subsequent generations continue to take pride in his name, as he made one of the greatest changes not only in boxing but also in the world of sports.
