From December 10, 2025, Australia has banned children under 16 from accessing social media. Ten major platforms, including TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook, must block children or face fines of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars.
The main goal of the ban is to protect young people from harmful content and mental health risks online. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese advised children to spend their free time on sports, learning new skills, reading books, and face-to-face interactions with friends and family.
The decision is being closely watched by other countries. Experts say Australia’s experience could guide other nations in creating rules to limit social media use among youth. At the same time, tech companies have expressed concern about the law’s impact on user growth.
The Australian government plans to update the ban as new platforms emerge and to monitor its effects on young users. Before the ban, 86% of children aged 8–15 used social media, showing its widespread use.
