The story of a small dog named Choco has become one of the most remarkable lost-pet reunions in the United States. The dog disappeared from his home in Antelope, California, in May 2021 and was considered missing for many years. However, he has recently returned home. People reports.
His owner, Patricia, never lost hope that Choco would one day be found.
“I always believed he was alive. I knew he had a microchip and I just kept waiting for the phone call,” she said.
The woman’s intuition proved correct, and the call did come nearly four years and seven months after his disappearance. It turned out that Choco was not nearby but in Lincoln Park near Detroit — about 3.7 thousand kilometers from home.
The dog was found tied to a fence near a shelter. Staff members discovered his microchip and immediately contacted the owner.
“When they told me Choco was in Michigan, I was shocked. I even thought they had made a mistake — after all, there is also a Lincoln in California,” Patricia recalled.
She admitted that she didn’t know how she would bring the dog back. That’s when the nonprofit organization Helping Paws and Claws stepped in after seeing Patricia’s post on social media and decided to organize an “Operation Bring Choco Home.” One person donated airline miles to cover the dog’s flight. Volunteers in Michigan picked Choco up from the shelter, took him to the airport, and even accompanied him on the flight to California. Due to flight delays, the journey lasted an entire day.
While waiting for the flight, Choco was cared for by staff from the Lincoln Park shelter, a local veterinary clinic, and a mobile transport service. They monitored his condition to ensure he remained healthy.
On December 3, the pet finally arrived at the home he had waited nearly five years to return to. Patricia said that even though her hair had turned slightly gray, Choco recognized her immediately. During the years he was gone, two children were born into the family, and now the dog is getting to know his “little brother and sister.”
