Attack on newspaper offices in Bangladesh, staff at risk

Work was disrupted at two major newspapers in Bangladesh after their offices were attacked. The incident happened on Thursday, when protesters set fire to the buildings following the killing of young activist Sharif Osman Hadi last week.

Newspaper staff said they struggled to breathe. Some stayed on the roof for several hours and were rescued only after additional security forces arrived. Large parts of the buildings were damaged by fire.

The interim government condemned the incident and promised to hold the perpetrators accountable. It stated that attacks on journalists are attacks on the truth, and that the democratic process in the country must continue steadily.

Sharif Osman Hadi, 32, was one of the leaders of the student protests. He was shot by masked individuals on December 12. The case is under investigation and several people have been detained.
