President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump and supported initiatives to end the war in Ukraine. During the conversation, official Astana expressed its readiness to provide a favorable platform for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.
Will Astana become a center of negotiations?
According to the presidential press service, Tokayev clearly defined Kazakhstan's role in the peace process. He emphasized that Kazakhstan is not a direct mediator, but "in the spirit of goodwill," it can create all the conditions for bringing the parties together at one table.
"Resolving this conflict is extremely difficult, because the territorial issue is at the forefront. "The situation requires a compromise from both sides, recognizing reality," the Kazakh leader said.
Trump's peace plan and new steps
During the conversation, Tokayev praised Donald Trump's political will and leadership ability in resolving international conflicts. As a reminder, the US presented its peace plan for Ukraine at the end of November. Since then, diplomatic relations have noticeably intensified:
- December 20-21: Representatives of the USA and Russia met.
- December 19-21: The Ukrainian delegation discussed the plan with American and European partners.
According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Washington is now proposing a direct dialogue between Ukraine, Russia, and Europe. Kyiv agreed to this initiative.
Putin and Zelenskyy: Where will the meeting take place?
The question of the face-to-face meeting of the heads of the two states still remains a mystery. Vladimir Putin stated that Zelenskyy should arrive in Moscow for the meeting, but the Ukrainian president vehemently denied this.
In such a situation, the solution to the problem could be offered by a neutral state like Kazakhstan, which has good relations with both sides. Tokayev believes that to achieve peace, all parties must demonstrate flexibility and a high level of professionalism.
In your opinion, can the city of Astana be the most convenient place to reconcile Moscow and Kyiv?
