The U.S. Supreme Court has for now rejected Donald Trump’s plan to send National Guard troops to the Chicago area. The court upheld a lower court ruling following a lawsuit filed by Illinois state officials and Chicago city leaders. As a result, the deployment of hundreds of troops to the area has been temporarily halted.
The court said the government failed to provide sufficient legal grounds for using military forces. The Supreme Court stated that the president can take control of the National Guard only in emergency situations. Three justices voted against the decision.
The Trump administration described protests around Chicago as dangerous and said troops were needed to protect federal facilities and personnel. However, state and city officials said the protests were mostly peaceful and that local police were able to manage the situation.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker called the court’s decision an important step. He said it prevents the central government from overstepping its authority. As the case continues, the issue of sending troops to Chicago may be reviewed again later.
