An unexpected scandal has occurred at the official residence of French President Emmanuel Macron — the Élysée Palace. One of the palace employees is suspected of secretly removing and selling expensive silver and porcelain items online. The value of the stolen objects is estimated at approximately €40,000. Two accomplices have also been arrested. This was reported by The Guardian, citing the Paris Prosecutor’s Office.
According to investigators, the employee responsible for preserving the collections had been secretly removing rare porcelain items from the Sèvres manufactory — considered part of the national heritage — over a long period of time. These items were later offered for sale on online platforms.
The incident was uncovered by specialists from the Sèvres manufactory, who noticed rare palace-owned items appearing on the internet. During searches, nearly 100 objects were seized from the suspects and returned to the palace. Among them were Baccarat crystal pieces and works from the Lalique workshop.
The accused face up to 10 years in prison. The court hearing is scheduled for February 26, 2026.
Notably, this is not the only major theft from French museums. Recently, valuable jewelry belonging to Napoleon and Joséphine was stolen from the Louvre Museum, with damages estimated at €88 million. Following the incident, some of the suspects were arrested at an airport.
