In Ukraine, marriage may be allowed from the age of 14

A new legislative initiative clarifying the rules on the marriage age has been placed on the agenda of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada. According to the document, the general minimum marriage age in the country is expected to remain 18, but the possibility of allowing marriage from the age of 14 in certain exceptional cases is being discussed.

Under the proposal in the draft, marriage at 14 would be possible only by a court decision and only in cases such as pregnancy or the birth of a child. In other words, this is not a “rule for everyone” — each case would be considered individually.

At the same time, it is planned to keep Ukraine’s existing practice of allowing marriage from the age of 16 through a court decision.

At present, the initiative is still at an early stage: it must go through committee discussions and then be reviewed in parliament. Public opinion is divided — some view it as a legal protection mechanism in certain situations, while others stress that the risk of early marriages could increase.
