Monthly payments are allocated to grandparents caring for grandchildren

A new social program aimed at supporting families is being launched in South Korea. According to it, grandparents or close relatives will have the opportunity to receive a monthly payment for caring for grandchildren.

According to The Independent, the initiative was implemented as an alternative to kindergarten or nanny services. That is, if family members take responsibility for caring for the child, financial incentives will be provided by the state.

In particular, on the island of Jeju, this program was launched in March. A similar system has been operating in Seoul since 2023. According to the rules, if a grandfather, grandmother, or other relative cares for a child for at least 40 hours a month, they receive a payment of approximately $200.

According to experts, such programs are aimed at mitigating demographic problems in the country. Because the birth rate in South Korea is one of the lowest in the world.

Thus, the government is trying to facilitate childcare and prevent population decline by encouraging families.
