US establishes NATO "blacklist": Will allies face sanctions?

The US administration has compiled a list of NATO countries that did not support Washington in its conflict with Iran and is considering potential measures against them. Politico reported this, citing informed sources.
According to the reports, the White House has prepared a specialized document that categorizes allies as "good" and "bad." The document analyzes the contributions of NATO members to the organization's activities and assigns them to different levels. This document was developed ahead of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s visit to Washington on April 8–12.
Sources indicate that while the details of the document remain classified, potential options under consideration include cutting NATO funding, reducing the US military contingent in Europe, or redeploying forces. Measures such as suspending joint military exercises and restricting arms sales are also reportedly being discussed.
This initiative was first mentioned in December 2025 by US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. According to him, active and loyal allies will receive benefits, while countries that fail to meet their obligations will face negative consequences.
US President Donald Trump previously expressed his intention to "seriously reconsider" policy within NATO. He has openly voiced dissatisfaction with certain allies for failing to support the United States regarding the situation with Iran.
Analysts note that disagreements between the US and NATO have been intensifying recently. In particular, issues surrounding Greenland and the positions of European nations on military aid have sparked sharp resentment in Washington. President Trump has even emphasized the necessity of reassessing the US role in NATO during certain meetings.
According to experts, the emergence of such a "blacklist" could seriously impact unity within the alliance and lead to new tensions in transatlantic relations.
