Central Asia Among World Leaders in Water Consumption: What About Uzbekistan?

New statistical data on global water resource usage has been released. According to the global index provided by the Worldometer portal, Central Asian countries rank among the top ten in the world for per capita water consumption.
Turkmenistan leads the region in this regard. According to the data, an average person in this country consumes 15,445 liters of water per day, making it the absolute leader in the global ranking.
Other Central Asian countries also rank high. Specifically, Uzbekistan holds the first place in the region with an annual total water consumption of 54.56 billion cubic meters. The daily per capita consumption is 4,778 liters, placing it among the top ten countries globally.
The following rankings are:
- Kazakhstan — 22.77 billion cubic meters annual consumption, 3,397 liters per person;
- Tajikistan — 11.49 billion cubic meters, 4,460 liters;
- Kyrgyzstan — approximately 8 billion cubic meters, 4,153 liters.
Analyses show that the highest water consumption rates, alongside Central Asia, are observed in countries such as Chile, Guyana, the USA, Iran, Estonia, and Azerbaijan.
The most economical user is the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa, where a person consumes only 32 liters of water per day.
Experts believe such high consumption rates are linked to irrigation systems, agriculture, and infrastructure, making water conservation and the development of modern irrigation systems increasingly urgent for the region.
It is noted that Uzbekistan is also expanding state programs for the rational use of water resources, modernization of canals, and combating waste.
